The Story Behind TheraFlow Health

The work that changed my life was not the work I was being paid to do.

How humanitarian work, patient care, and my own recovery experiences shaped the heart behind TheraFlow Health.

Eva Tutic in East Africa — a significant chapter in her journey
A Different Kind of Life

From global project management to a more human calling

Before moving to the United States, Eva was living a completely different life. Based in England and working as a Global Project Manager across EMEA, it was a strong career — professional, international, structured, and respected. Her last major project took her to East Africa, where she spent a significant and transformative chapter of her life and helped support the development of a global aid and relief center in Kenya.

That work mattered. She had the opportunity to work alongside organizations like the United Nations and other NGOs, and it felt meaningful to be part of something larger than herself. But if she is honest, the work that changed her most was not her formal role.

It was what happened outside of it.

"When life becomes that simple and that clear. When what matters is no longer title, status, or career progression — but dignity. Relief. Access. Education. Care."

— Eva Tutic, Founder, TheraFlow Health

She spent time visiting the slums, helping where she could, raising money, and bringing practical support directly to people who needed it. Sometimes the need was even more basic than she could have imagined.

She was 38 years old, and she knew she wanted a different kind of life. Not necessarily an easier one. Not even a clearer one. But a more human one — rooted in compassion, empathy, and service. Work where she could help someone understand something they did not know, navigate something frightening, or feel less alone in a vulnerable moment.

The Same Thread, A Different Setting

Pulled toward people in vulnerable transitions

Years later, that same thread found her again in patient care.

She began working closely in the world of plastic surgery and recovery, and once again found herself drawn to people in vulnerable transitions. This time, it looked like swelling, scar tissue, discomfort, confusion, and all the invisible emotional weight that comes with healing.

What struck her most was not just the surgery itself. It was what happened after.

Patients went home carrying so much more than discharge instructions could ever address. They were swollen, uncomfortable, overwhelmed, and often frightened by what they were feeling in their own bodies. Many were undereducated about recovery and left to figure out far too much on their own.

"Recovery was being treated like an afterthought, when in reality it was one of the most important parts of the entire process."

— Eva Tutic, CLT CPST MLD-C LMT

Different setting. Same truth. People need more than rushed information. They need support. They need education. They need care that feels calm, grounded, and human.

That is what led Eva deeper into lymphatic work, post-operative recovery, compression guidance, scar support, and patient education. And that is what led her to build TheraFlow Health.

She did not build it because it was trendy. She built it because she could see the gap.

When the Clinician Becomes the Patient

Her own surgery confirmed everything

By the time Eva had her back fusion surgery, TheraFlow Health already existed. Her own surgery did not create her mission — but it absolutely confirmed it.

She has also experienced plastic surgery herself, which gave her its own understanding of vulnerability and recovery. But the back fusion changed her in a quieter, deeper way. It reminded her what it feels like to become the patient. To feel fragile, exposed, and uncertain inside your own body.

"I remember knowing very clearly that Manual Lymphatic Drainage was something that could have supported me after surgery — and yet it was never mentioned. That stayed with me. Because sometimes life lets you witness a problem professionally. And sometimes it asks you to live it personally. When that happens, it changes the way you show up."

— Eva Tutic

Today, when Eva sits with patients, she brings more than technique into the room. She brings knowledge, yes — but also lived empathy. She knows what it is to witness vulnerability, and she knows what it is to live inside it.

The Protocol Behind the Practice

What is ERAPS?

ERAPS — Enhanced Recovery After Plastic Surgery — is a structured post-surgical recovery protocol co-created by Eva Tutic and a board-certified plastic surgeon. It integrates clinical MLD, compression therapy, scar management, and patient education into a cohesive, evidence-informed framework.

ERAPS was developed from years of clinical observation — recognising that post-surgical patients needed more than a single modality. They needed a structured, progressive protocol that addressed swelling, tissue healing, scar remodelling, and patient education in a coordinated way.

Every TheraFlow Health patient benefits from the ERAPS framework — not a generic massage protocol, but a clinically developed approach to post-surgical healing.

The 8 Pillars of ERAPS
  • 01Clinical Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
  • 02Medical-Grade Compression Therapy
  • 03Scar & Tissue Management
  • 04Structured Patient Education
  • 05Measurement-Based Outcomes
  • 06Surgeon Collaboration & Protocol Alignment
  • 07Adjunct Modality Integration
  • 08Continuity of Care & Progress Monitoring
The One Thread

The same calling, finding her again and again

If there is one thread that has run through every chapter of Eva's life, it is this: she has always been pulled toward people in vulnerable moments.

In East Africa, that looked like filling a suitcase with medicine and bringing books and supplies to people who had very little.

In her work today, it looks like helping someone feel less afraid of what is happening in their body.

"Different lives. Different settings.
Same calling."

About Eva

More than a decade of experience in plastic surgery and surgical recovery

CLT — Certified Lymphedema Therapist CPST — Certified Plastic Surgery Therapist MLD-C — Manual Lymphatic Drainage Certified LMT — Licensed Massage Therapist

Eva Tutic is the founder of TheraFlow Health and a dedicated advocate for compassionate, patient-centered care. Specializing in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, post-operative recovery, and lymphatic wellness, she is passionate about supporting clients through every stage of healing with education, clinical insight, and personalized care.

Her foundation in this field was built in California, where she spent over a decade working in plastic surgery alongside a board-certified plastic surgeon. During that time, Eva developed a deep understanding of the recovery journey and saw firsthand how much patients need not only clinical support, but reassurance, education, and thoughtful guidance throughout the process.

Her time in East Africa was a significant and transformative chapter of her life — one that shaped her belief that healing is most powerful when it is both skilled and deeply human. That experience reinforced what she had seen in clinical practice: that the body responds not just to technique, but to presence, patience, and genuine care.

Today, with over 13 years of experience and advanced lymphatic training, Eva brings a unique blend of expertise, compassion, and advocacy to every client she serves. She is known for her thoughtful approach, attention to detail, and commitment to making recovery feel less overwhelming and more supported.

Eva holds four professional credentials: Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT), Certified Plastic Surgery Therapist (CPST), Manual Lymphatic Drainage Certified (MLD-C), and Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT). Her lymphatic credentials were earned through ACOLS — the Academy of Lymphatic Studies, one of the most respected lymphatic therapy training institutions in the country. She is the Co-Creator of ERAPS — Enhanced Recovery After Plastic Surgery — a structured post-surgical recovery protocol developed in collaboration with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Eva's philosophy is simple: healing should never feel confusing or lonely. Through TheraFlow Health, she is committed to creating a space where clients feel cared for, empowered, and confident in their recovery journey.

Patient Preparation & Instructions

MLD Treatment Instructions — What to Know

Before Your Appointment

  • Arrive with clean, dry skin — no oils, lotions, moisturizers, or makeup on treatment areas
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Do not wear compression garments to your appointment — your practitioner will assist with application after treatment
  • Bring any compression garments you use or have been instructed to wear
  • Do not take pain medication 1–2 hours prior unless prescribed — this can mask sensory feedback needed for safe treatment
  • Notify your practitioner of any changes to health status, medications, or surgical care

Post-Surgical Patient Requirements

  • Required post-operative documentation must be received at least 24 hours prior to your appointment
  • Photographs and measurements are performed in accordance with your signed informed consent
  • Treatment plans are determined based on surgical timelines, tissue response, and clinical assessment
BBL Patients: Arrive wearing a thong or no undergarment to allow safe access to treatment areas. Full-coverage garments are not appropriate for BBL sessions. If preparation is not followed, treatment will be modified or postponed.

Appointment Structure (75 min total)

  • ~15 min: Intake review, documentation, measurements, photographs, garment review, treatment planning
  • ~60 min: Hands-on Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Patients should not expect 75 minutes of hands-on treatment time

After Your Session

  • Temporary responses may include: increased urination, fatigue, lightheadedness, emotional release, mild soreness, or changes in swelling
  • These are expected and generally short-lived
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Wear compression as instructed
  • Follow all post-treatment guidance provided
When to Contact Us

Contact TheraFlow Health if you experience persistent dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, signs of infection, sudden increase in swelling, or any response that feels unusual. In a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

MLD is a medically guided modality. Booking an appointment does not guarantee eligibility. All treatment decisions are based on clinical assessment, safety considerations, and available documentation.

What Is Post-Surgical MLD?

The fastest path to a smoother recovery

Surgeon Clearance Required

All post-surgical MLD services at TheraFlow Health require documented surgeon or physician clearance prior to your first appointment. Clearance documentation must be received at least 24 hours before your session. This policy ensures your safety and allows Eva to plan treatment around your specific surgical protocol.

After any surgical procedure — liposuction, BBL, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty, mastectomy, breast augmentation, or joint replacement — your lymphatic system is overwhelmed. Without proper drainage, fibrosis (hardened scar tissue) can set in permanently.

Post-surgical MLD uses precise, light-pressure techniques to manually support lymphatic flow, moving excess fluid back into circulation and out of the body. Sessions are targeted to the surgical site and surrounding drainage pathways.

"MLD may begin as early as 48 hours post-operatively — with surgeon clearance — to support the lymphatic system during the earliest and most critical phase of healing."
— Eva Tutic, CLT CPST, TheraFlow Health

  • May help support swelling management after surgery
  • May help reduce the risk of fibrosis
  • May support a faster visible recovery timeline
  • Supports immune function during recovery
  • May help reduce post-operative discomfort
The TheraFlow Treatment Sequence
1
MLD First

Opens lymphatic pathways, clears fluid congestion, and prepares tissue to accept and maintain compression.

2
Medical-Grade Foam Applied

Custom-cut foam placed after MLD to maintain cleared pathways, target fibrotic zones, and create pressure gradients the garment alone cannot achieve.

3
Compression Garment Secured

Sustains the physiologic gains between sessions and preserves surgical contour throughout recovery. Neither MLD nor compression works optimally in isolation.

Sessions are 75 minutes: 60 minutes hands-on MLD + 15 minutes clinical documentation, measurement, and home care guidance.

Common procedures we support

  • BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)
  • Liposuction & body contouring
  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  • Breast augmentation & lift
  • Rhinoplasty & facial procedures
  • Mastectomy & breast reconstruction
  • Joint replacement surgery
  • C-section recovery

Recovery Support That Extends Beyond the Session

Recovery may also include guidance on compression garments, foam applications, scar support, and other recovery essentials.

About This Service

Transforming scars through specialized manual care

Surgeon clearance required. All post-surgical tissue and scar therapy at TheraFlow Health requires documented physician clearance prior to your first appointment.

Scar tissue forms whenever the skin heals from a surgical incision. The texture, thickness, and mobility of scar tissue can be significantly improved with targeted manual therapy — especially when treatment begins during the remodeling phase (typically 6 weeks to 2 years post-procedure).

Tissue Issues We Address
  • Fibrosis and scar tissue hardening
  • Banding — tight, cord-like scar tissue beneath the skin
  • Puckering and skin irregularities at incision sites
  • Dimpling and surface texture changes
  • Nodularity — lumpy or bumpy tissue beneath the skin
  • Contour irregularities after body contouring procedures
  • Tightness, itching, and sensitivity
  • Reduced tissue mobility and range of motion
Adjunct Techniques

Depending on your presentation and stage of healing, sessions may also include:

  • Lymphatic cupping — gentle suction to lift and mobilize tissue
  • Gua sha — instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization
  • Kinesiology taping (K-taping)
  • Red light therapy (RLT)
  • Cryotherapy
  • Heat therapy using medical-grade hydrocollator moist heat
  • Silicone scar support guidance
  • CBD oil for Stage 2 scar management

Supportive Products

Scar support may also include foam applications or skin-supportive care to complement healing between visits.

Why Compression Guidance Matters

Not all compression garments deliver the same therapeutic result

Surgeon clearance required for all post-surgical compression fittings. A FREE fitting is included with garment purchase. Measurement-only appointments are available at $50.

The phrase "medical grade" has no regulated legal definition in the United States. A garment without a validated mmHg compression rating cannot provide predictable therapeutic pressure — regardless of how it is marketed. This is precisely why a Certified Lymphedema Therapist performs your fitting.

Every compression garment at TheraFlow Health is a medical-grade, FDA Class I listed device with a validated mmHg compression rating sized to your actual body measurements.

Stage 1 — Day 1 through Weeks 4–6

  • 20–30 mmHg for body garments; 15–20 mmHg for bras
  • Soft, adaptable — designed for fluctuating swelling
  • Hook-and-eye side closure preferred (not zipper)
  • Lipo Foam and Gray Foam Pad with Soft Rosidal
  • Minimum two garments required — one to wear, one in the wash

Stage 2 — Weeks 4–6 through Weeks 12–16

  • 15–20 mmHg sustained moderate pressure
  • More structured — designed for extended daily wear
  • Komprex foam introduced for targeted fibrosis reduction
  • Scar management products introduced with surgeon clearance
  • Continue two-garment daily rotation

"Surgery is only the first step in your transformation. Recovery is where the real results — and the real healing — happen."

— Eva Tutic, CLT · CPST · MLD-C · LMT
Why Zipper Garments Are Not Recommended

Side hook-and-eye closure — the clinical difference

Zippers look like the easiest option — but they consistently perform worst in post-surgical recovery. Pulling a zipper against acutely swollen, tender tissue is extremely difficult and often impossible in the first week. The zipper also creates a single rigid tension line that concentrates pressure beneath the closure while leaving adjacent tissue under-compressed.

Side hook-and-eye closures distribute tension evenly and are significantly more comfortable after abdominoplasty or abdominal liposuction.

What makes a garment truly medical-grade

  • A validated, manufacturer-stated mmHg compression rating
  • FDA Class I medical device listing
  • Anatomically appropriate graduated compression
  • Sizing based on actual body measurements — not generic S/M/L/XL
  • Materials confirmed to maintain compression integrity through laundering

Body garments: 15–30 mmHg. Bras and upper-body garments: 15–20 mmHg. If a garment does not disclose its mmHg value, its therapeutic pressure cannot be reliably predicted.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage? A Virginia Beach Patient's Guide

By Eva Tutic, CLT CPST MLD-C LMT · TheraFlow Health, Virginia Beach, VA · March 10, 2026 · 8 min read

Manual lymphatic drainage facial treatment — TheraFlow Health Virginia Beach

If you've recently had surgery, been dealing with persistent swelling, or heard your doctor mention "lymphatic drainage," you've probably found yourself wondering: what actually is Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and do I really need it? This guide answers that — in plain language, without the fluff.

What Is the Lymphatic System?

Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that runs parallel to your circulatory system throughout your entire body. Unlike blood, which is pumped by your heart, lymph fluid moves only when your muscles contract and your body moves. The system has three main jobs: filtering waste and toxins from your tissues, fighting infection through immune cells, and maintaining fluid balance throughout your body.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized, light-touch massage technique developed in the 1930s by Danish physicians Emil and Estrid Vodder. It uses very specific, rhythmic movements — applied with extremely light pressure — to manually support lymphatic flow just beneath the skin, encouraging excess fluid to drain back into the lymphatic network and eventually be filtered and eliminated.

MLD is not a deep tissue massage. The pressure used is lighter than you'd expect — about the weight of a nickel on skin. More pressure actually compresses the delicate lymphatic vessels and works against drainage.

Who Benefits From MLD?

  • Post-surgical patients — Anyone who has had liposuction, a BBL, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, mastectomy, or virtually any other procedure. MLD clears inflammatory fluid quickly and reduces the risk of fibrosis.
  • Oncology patients — Breast cancer treatment, which often involves lymph node removal or radiation, carries significant lymphedema risk. MLD is a primary treatment for both prevention and management.
  • Pregnant and postpartum women — The third trimester brings significant lower-body swelling. Postpartum swelling, especially after C-section, responds well to gentle MLD.
  • Chronic wellness clients — Anyone dealing with persistent bloating, chronic fatigue, puffy face or legs, frequent illness, or skin issues may have a sluggish lymphatic system that responds well to regular MLD.

How Is This Different From Other Massages?

True MLD is a medical-grade technique requiring specialized certification. The pressure is far lighter than Swedish or deep tissue massage. The sequencing follows the anatomy of the lymphatic system, not muscle groups. At TheraFlow Health, Eva holds Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) and Certified Plastic Surgery Therapist (CPST) credentials and has trained specifically in post-surgical and oncology lymphatic care.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

This depends entirely on your situation. Post-surgical clients in the acute phase typically benefit from sessions every 2–3 days. As swelling resolves, frequency decreases. For a detailed breakdown by procedure, read our Post-Op Session Guide.

How Many Post-Op MLD Sessions Do You Need After Plastic Surgery?

By Eva Tutic, CLT CPST MLD-C LMT · TheraFlow Health, Virginia Beach, VA · February 24, 2026 · 7 min read

It's one of the most common questions Eva gets from new post-surgical clients: "How many sessions do I actually need?" The honest answer is that it depends on your procedure, your body, how soon you started treatment, and your recovery goals.

Why Does Timing Matter So Much?

The early phase after surgery is an important window for lymphatic support. Without adequate drainage, fluid may accumulate in the surgical area, potentially contributing to prolonged swelling, bruising, and the conditions associated with fibrosis.

Starting MLD early, when cleared by your surgeon, may help support swelling management, recovery comfort, and overall healing outcomes.

Session Recommendations by Procedure

Liposuction & Body Contouring

Many clients benefit from sessions every few days in the first two weeks, tapering as healing progresses. The total number of sessions varies depending on your procedure, healing response, and surgeon protocol — Eva will outline a personalized plan at your first appointment.

BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)

BBL involves both lipo donor sites and fat transfer recipient sites. Because multiple areas are treated, many clients benefit from an intensive early phase of care — the specific number of sessions depends on your individual healing response and surgeon guidance.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Seroma (fluid pockets) are a possible complication following abdominoplasty. Early lymphatic support, when cleared by your surgeon, may help support fluid management during recovery. Sessions are planned based on individual healing needs.

Breast Augmentation, Lift, or Reduction

The number of sessions varies depending on the scope of surgery and healing response. Eva will assess and recommend a personalized plan at your consultation.

Rhinoplasty & Facial Procedures

Many rhinoplasty clients see meaningful improvement with early MLD sessions in the first two weeks. The specific number of sessions depends on individual healing needs.

What If You're Starting Late?

Starting MLD weeks or months after surgery is still worth doing. Fibrosis can be addressed with tissue and scar therapy. It's never too late to support your recovery — you'll just need more sessions than if you'd started early.

7 Signs Your Lymphatic System Needs Support Right Now

By Eva Tutic, CLT CPST MLD-C LMT · TheraFlow Health, Virginia Beach, VA · February 8, 2026 · 6 min read

Most people think of the lymphatic system only when something has obviously gone wrong — after surgery, or when a doctor mentions lymphedema. But your lymphatic system works (or struggles) every single day, and the signs of a sluggish or overwhelmed system are often mistaken for unrelated issues.

1. Persistent Puffiness or Swelling

Waking up with a puffy face? Shoes feeling tighter in the evening? Chronic, low-level swelling — especially when it varies with hydration, activity, and diet — is one of the most common signs of lymphatic congestion.

2. Chronic Fatigue That Sleep Doesn't Fix

When your lymphatic system is sluggish, metabolic waste products linger in your tissues longer than they should, and your immune system is in a constant low-level state of activation. The result: a fatigue that feels deep, persistent, and unresponsive to rest.

3. Frequent Illness or Slow Recovery

If you catch everything that's going around and take longer than others to get over it, your lymphatic and immune systems may be under-resourced.

4. Skin Issues — Breakouts, Dryness, or Dullness

When your lymphatic system isn't clearing waste efficiently, the body tries to push toxins out through the skin instead. This can manifest as chronic breakouts, skin dullness, rough texture, or eczema flares.

5. Brain Fog

Difficulty concentrating, poor short-term memory, a sense of mental sluggishness — these are increasingly recognized as signs of systemic inflammation, closely tied to lymphatic function.

6. Digestive Issues — Bloating and Discomfort

Lymphatic congestion can contribute to bloating, slow transit, and general digestive discomfort, particularly after eating high-fat or inflammatory foods.

7. Aches, Heaviness, or Stiffness

Lymphatic congestion creates a low-level inflammatory environment throughout the body. Joints feel stiff in the morning. Muscles feel heavy. You feel generally run down without a specific injury or illness to point to.

What to Do About It

The good news is that the lymphatic system responds well to targeted support. Regular MLD sessions are the most direct intervention. If you're in Virginia Beach or the surrounding Hampton Roads area and recognize several of these signs in yourself, a lymphatic wellness consultation with Eva at TheraFlow Health is a great starting point.

Why the Body Holds — and How Gentle Touch Teaches It to Let Go

By Eva Tutic, CLT CPST MLD-C LMT · TheraFlow Health, Virginia Beach, VA

We live in a world that asks us to be strong all the time. To push through. To keep going. To perform. To hold it together.

And when life feels uncertain, overwhelming, or unsafe, the body does what it has always done to survive: it holds. It holds tension. It holds breath. It holds fatigue. It holds emotion. And sometimes, it holds physically too — in the form of swelling, heaviness, tightness, pain, and a deep sense that the body is carrying more than it knows how to release.

We often think of these symptoms as signs that something has gone wrong. But sometimes, they are signs that the body is doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect.

Touch Was Our First Language

Before we ever learned language, we understood touch. A mother's touch told us we were safe. A hand on our back told us we belonged. Touch was our first experience of comfort, regulation, and connection. That has not changed.

Even now, in adulthood, the body still responds to safe, steady, intentional touch in profound ways. And yet, one of the first things we lose in hard times is touch. We hesitate. We pull back. We live behind screens. We become overstimulated, emotionally guarded, and physically braced.

We do not need less care. We need more of the kind of care that helps the body feel safe enough to soften.

What Animals Never Forgot

We can see this clearly in our pets. When a dog senses distress, it comes closer. When a cat senses sadness, it curls up near the body. They do not try to explain, fix, or analyze. They stay.

Animals instinctively understand the power of presence and touch. They lean in, rest against us, and help regulate us simply by being near. This is not complicated. It is ancient. It is biological. It is deeply human.

Where Manual Lymphatic Drainage Comes In

This is why Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD, matters so much. MLD is not forceful. It is not harsh. It is not about overpowering the body. It is a gentle, intentional form of touch that meets the body where it is.

For many people — especially after surgery, during recovery, or in periods of high stress — the body does not need more force. It needs permission. It needs a signal that it no longer has to brace so tightly.

When the body feels safe, things begin to shift. Swelling can soften. Heaviness can ease. Breathing can deepen. Sleep can improve. The entire system can begin to move out of protection and into release.

People often do not realize how much they have been holding until they finally feel what it is like not to.

Swelling Is Not Always the Enemy

In my work, I have come to see swelling differently. Swelling is not always failure. Sometimes it is protection. After surgery, the body is processing trauma, fluid shifts, inflammation, and change. In other cases, chronic stress, pain, illness, immobility, or nervous system overload can create a body that feels as if it is constantly on guard.

The answer is not always to force the body into submission. Sometimes healing begins when we stop asking the body to fight harder — and begin asking what it needs in order to feel safe enough to let go.

The Difference Between Being Handled and Being Held

The body knows the difference between being handled and being held. That difference matters. There is a kind of care that feels rushed, corrective, and impersonal. And there is a kind of care that says: You can soften now. You do not have to hold everything anymore.

That is the deeper power of touch. Not just physical relief — but the experience of being met with presence.

The Story That Changed Me

When I opened my own practice in August 2023, I had all the fears that come with starting something new. Would anyone come? Would I make it? Was I ready?

Then I received my very first appointment request. It was not from the patient herself, but from her daughter. She told me that her mother was dying from a rare kidney cancer. They did not know how much time she had left — days, maybe weeks. Her mother was a beautiful human being. The kind of person who had touched many lives long before she ever met me.

After her first Manual Lymphatic Drainage session, her daughter booked another appointment. Then another. And then every day. On the days I was not there, she asked for me.

Her daughters told me how grateful they were — not simply because of the appointment itself, but because of how their mother seemed afterward. She rested more easily. Her body softened. She looked peaceful.

At my final appointment with her, I knew the time was near. I hugged her. I stroked her face gently. She looked at me and smiled, and we stayed in that moment for a long time. I did not want to leave.

The very next day, her daughter called to tell me her mother had passed. She told me how much her mother had asked about me, and when her next appointment would be. That evening, her body finally allowed her to drift off peacefully.

She was the first person who truly showed me the power of touch. Not the power to fix. Not the power to save. But the power to help someone let go.

Why This Matters Now

We are living in a world where many people are carrying too much. Too much stress. Too much fear. Too much pressure. Too much silence. Too much responsibility. And the body keeps the score in its own quiet way.

This is why gentle touch matters. This is why Manual Lymphatic Drainage matters. This is why presence matters. Not because touch is indulgent. Not because gentleness is weak. But because sometimes the most healing thing we can offer another human being is the experience of not having to hold everything alone.

In a world that keeps asking us to push through, gentle touch reminds the body that it can soften. And when the body softens, healing can begin.

The Heart Behind TheraFlow Health

Our Philosophy — Healing begins when the body feels safe.

Our philosophy — TheraFlow Health Virginia Beach

At the heart of this work is one simple belief: the body heals best when it feels safe.

We live in a world that often encourages people to push through pain, ignore what their body is asking for, and treat healing like something that should happen on command. But the body does not always respond to force. More often, it responds to safety, support, presence, and time.

At TheraFlow Health, we believe the body is always communicating. Swelling, heaviness, tightness, fatigue, and discomfort are not always signs that something has gone wrong. Often, they are signs that the body is working hard to protect, adapt, and recover.

Our role is not simply to treat symptoms. Our role is to listen, assess, support, and help create the conditions where healing becomes possible.

We Believe in Whole-Person Care

Every person brings more than a procedure or diagnosis

Every person who walks through our doors brings more than a procedure or diagnosis. They bring a story, a nervous system, a healing history, fears, hopes, and a body that deserves to be approached with dignity. That is why our philosophy is rooted in care that is both clinical and compassionate.

Listening before rushing

Education before overwhelm

Presence before pressure

Skilled care without losing humanity

We Believe in the Power of Gentle Touch

Touch is one of the most forgotten forms of care

Touch is one of the first ways human beings experience safety and connection. Long before language, the body understands presence. Gentle, intentional care can help support comfort, release, regulation, and restoration — and help the body shift out of a guarded state and into a place where healing can begin.

"Before we understood language, we understood touch. A mother's hand. A comforting embrace. A quiet presence that said: you are safe here. That truth does not disappear with age."

— Eva Tutic, Founder
We Believe Healing Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Healing is deeply individual

For one person, progress may look like less swelling. For another, it may look like reduced discomfort, improved mobility, deeper rest, or simply feeling more supported in the recovery process. We honor those differences. We believe in thoughtful care tailored to the person in front of us.

"No one should feel dismissed, confused, or alone in their recovery. We believe people deserve clear guidance, professional support, and care that respects both the intelligence of the body and the emotional reality of healing."

Eva Tutic · CLT · CPST · MLD-C · LMT · Founder, TheraFlow Health

Because healing is not just about reducing symptoms.
It is about helping people feel supported, informed, and safe enough to let go of what the body has been holding.

Your Questions About Post-Surgical Recovery & MLD — Answered

TheraFlow Health Virginia Beach
About MLD
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)? +

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized, light-touch technique that manually supports lymphatic flow to help manage post-surgical swelling, bruising, and fibrosis. It is performed by certified therapists using gentle, rhythmic movements — not deep tissue pressure. At TheraFlow Health, all MLD is performed by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) and Certified Plastic Surgery Therapist (CPST).

Book MLD in Virginia Beach
Is MLD safe after plastic surgery? +

Yes — when performed by a certified therapist with proper post-surgical training. Eva Tutic holds CLT and CPST credentials and has over a decade of experience in plastic surgery recovery care. She adapts every session to your specific procedure, stage of healing, and surgeon guidelines.

How is MLD different from a regular massage? +

MLD is a medical-grade technique — not a relaxation service. The pressure is far lighter than Swedish or deep tissue massage. The sequencing follows the precise anatomy of the lymphatic system, not muscle groups. A massage marketed as "lymphatic" but performed with typical massage pressure will not produce clinical results.

Post-Surgical Recovery
When should I start MLD after surgery? +

MLD may begin as early as 48 hours post-operatively — with documented surgeon clearance received at least 24 hours before your appointment. Earlier intervention during the critical inflammatory window may support better swelling management and recovery outcomes.

Active surgical drains are not a contraindication. You may begin MLD with drains still in place. Eva works around drain sites and adapts the protocol accordingly.

Fat transfer procedures (BBL, breast fat transfer, facial fat grafting): MLD over grafted areas is deferred for approximately 2 weeks to allow fat cell viability and early angiogenesis to establish. However, MLD can begin in non-grafted areas during that deferral period — there is no reason to delay full treatment.

It is never too late to begin, but the earlier the better. Consistent early intervention is associated with better tissue outcomes.

Book Post-Surgical MLD
How many sessions will I need? +

Every patient heals differently, and Eva bases session recommendations on objective measurements and photographs — not a fixed calendar.

As a clinical guideline, Eva looks for a cumulative reduction of 18–20 cm across all measured areas after 3 sessions. This is an overall reduction across the body, not necessarily in any single area. If we reach that benchmark, recovery is progressing well. If not, additional sessions are typically recommended.

A minimum of 3 sessions is the initial clinical framework. Most post-surgical patients benefit from 5 or more sessions during Stage 1, particularly after body contouring, BBL, or abdominoplasty. Rhinoplasty and facial procedures may require fewer sessions concentrated in the first two weeks.

Your session plan is reassessed at every visit based on tissue response, measurements, and photos. Eva will always give you an honest, evidence-based recommendation — not a package upsell.

Book Your First Session
Does TheraFlow Health follow my surgeon's protocols? +

Yes, always. Eva works with your surgeon's post-operative instructions and defers to your surgical team on all clinical decisions. Bring any protocols or restrictions from your surgeon to your first session.

What is fibrosis and how does MLD help? +

Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue — essentially hardened scar tissue — that forms when inflammatory fluid is not properly cleared during recovery. It can feel like lumps or unevenness under the skin. MLD reduces fibrosis risk by clearing inflammatory fluid before it can solidify.

Do you offer compression garments or recovery products? +

Yes. TheraFlow Health carries a curated selection of medical-grade compression garments — exclusively from validated clinical vendors including Marena and Juzo. Every garment has a manufacturer-stated mmHg rating, FDA Class I medical device listing, and is sized from your actual body measurements.

If a specific garment or size is not in stock at the time of your fitting, Eva will ship it directly to your home at no additional handling fee. You will never be sent home without a plan.

A FREE compression garment fitting is included with every garment purchase. A $75 measurement-only fitting is available if you are not purchasing through TheraFlow Health.

Eva also carries medical-grade foam (Lipo Foam, Gray Foam Pad, Komprex), Lymphoderm skincare, silicone scar tape, female urinals, and third-party tested CBD oil for Stage 2 scar management.

What is ERAPS? +

ERAPS — Enhanced Recovery After Plastic Surgery — is a patient-centered recovery framework co-developed by Eva Tutic and her husband, a board-certified plastic surgeon, drawing directly from their combined clinical experience in plastic surgery practice.

ERAPS was adapted from ERAS® (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery), an evidence-based protocol already widely used by surgical teams in hospitals to reduce complications and improve outcomes. Eva recognized that ERAS was clinically excellent but not designed with the patient's recovery journey in mind. ERAPS reframes that clinical structure around the patient — adding compassionate education, empowerment, and individualized recovery support.

ERAPS is not just about MLD. It is a comprehensive 8-pillar recovery philosophy: preoperative education and counseling, risk assessment and mitigation, perioperative nutrition, anesthesia management, pain management, lymphatic and compression therapy, early mobilization, and postoperative follow-up care.

Eva also uses the proprietary Edema Risk Assessment (ERA) tool — developed within the ERAPS framework — to evaluate each patient's individual swelling risk profile and proactively plan session frequency, rather than reacting to problems after they arise.

Do you need compression garments after surgery? +

Yes. Compression is essential after most body contouring and reconstructive procedures. The right garment worn correctly supports fluid drainage, may help support swelling management, and helps tissue conform to its new contour. Eva provides expert compression guidance as part of every post-surgical recovery plan.

Contraindications & Safety
Are there contraindications to MLD? +

Yes. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a medically guided modality. Eva conducts a clinical intake assessment at every session. The following are general guidelines — your specific situation will be assessed individually.

Absolute Contraindications (MLD cannot proceed):

  • Acute, uncontrolled congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Active deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism
  • Acute infection with systemic fever
  • Active cellulitis at the treatment site
  • Active malignancy without oncologist clearance

Local Contraindications (treatment avoided in specific areas):

  • Open wounds or unhealed incisions
  • Active hematoma or seroma (refer to surgeon)
  • Active radiation treatment site
  • Areas with compromised skin integrity

Relative Contraindications (proceed with caution, modification, and clearance):

  • Thyroid conditions — avoid anterior neck without physician guidance
  • First trimester of pregnancy
  • Asthma or bronchospasm history — positioning modifications required
  • Renal insufficiency — reduced session intensity
  • Recent cardiac procedures

If you have a complex medical history, please contact TheraFlow Health before booking so Eva can review your situation and advise appropriately. Completion of a booking does not guarantee eligibility for treatment.

What should I bring to my first appointment? +
Important: All intake paperwork must be completed before your appointment. If forms are not completed in advance, they must be completed at the office and will count against your allotted session time. Surgeon clearance must be received at least 24 hours before your session — without it, the appointment will need to be rescheduled so Eva can review your protocol and create your treatment plan.
  • Completed intake paperwork (sent in advance — please complete before arrival)
  • Surgeon clearance documentation (must be received 24 hours prior)
  • Any post-operative instructions or surgical protocols from your surgeon
  • Your compression garments (do not wear them to the appointment — bring them in a bag)
  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • A list of current medications and supplements
  • BBL patients: arrive wearing a thong or no undergarment for proper access to treatment areas

Please arrive with clean, dry skin. Do not apply oils, lotions, creams, or makeup to the treatment area on the day of your appointment.

Do you accept insurance or HSA/FSA? +

We do not accept insurance directly. However, many HSA and FSA plans cover Manual Lymphatic Drainage and post-surgical recovery services when recommended by a physician. Ask about our payment plan options if you need flexible scheduling.

Is one MLD treatment enough? +

In most post-surgical cases, one MLD treatment is not enough to fully address swelling. Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps move excess fluid out of congested areas, but your body is still healing and may continue producing inflammation and fluid after surgery.

I often explain it using a faucet analogy: think of post-surgical swelling like a sink with the faucet turned on. MLD helps the body drain the water out — but if the faucet is still running because your tissues are inflamed and healing, fluid can continue to refill the area. That is why one treatment may help, but it may not be enough to keep swelling down long term. The number of sessions needed depends on the refill rate — meaning how quickly your body is continuing to produce and hold fluid after treatment.

In some cases, clients may even feel or appear more swollen after the first session. This can be normal and does not mean treatment made things worse. It happens because MLD begins to mobilize stagnant fluid, moving it from congested areas into pathways where the body can process and eliminate it. During that transition, swelling may temporarily seem more noticeable before the body has had time to fully clear it.

This is one reason I recommend treatment as a series rather than a one-time session, especially after surgery. Each session builds on the last, helping the body gradually reduce fluid, improve circulation, and support a more efficient recovery.

Thoughtfully Selected Recovery Support

More than a treatment — a complete recovery approach

Patients are often sent home after surgery with limited guidance on what products may help support healing. Compression, foam, scar care, and skin support are commonly discussed in recovery, yet many patients are left to sort through these options on their own.

TheraFlow Health offers a more informed approach by helping patients understand which recovery essentials may be appropriate based on their procedure, stage of healing, and individual recovery needs.

At TheraFlow Health, recovery support may include not only hands-on treatment and education, but also carefully selected recovery essentials designed to complement healing at home.

Why This Matters

Recovery can feel overwhelming when patients are expected to navigate garments, foam, scar care, and post-operative products without enough explanation. At TheraFlow Health, product guidance is part of a broader recovery-centered philosophy — not an afterthought.
